Electric power steering (EPS) is at the core of modern automotive steering technology. It uses an electric motor to provide steering assistance directly, replacing the conventional hydraulic system. Its operating principle consists of three key stages: intelligent sensing, precise calculation, and electric power assistance. Together, these stages translate the driver’s steering-wheel input into the actual turning movement of the wheels.

C‑EPS (Column‑Assist EPS)
Working principle: The assist motor is integrated into the steering column inside the passenger compartment. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the motor applies assist force directly to the steering column through a reduction mechanism, such as a worm-gear set. The steering force is then transmitted to the wheels through the intermediate shaft.
Features: C-EPS has the simplest structure and the lowest cost among the different EPS configurations. However, because the assist force must be transmitted through the steering column and intermediate shaft, the amount of assistance it can provide is relatively limited. In addition, because the motor is located close to the driver, the vibration and noise generated during operation can be transmitted relatively easily to the steering wheel.
Application: C-EPS is mainly used in economy small cars and compact sedans that do not require a high level of steering assistance.
P‑EPS (Pinion‑Assist EPS)
Working principle: The motor operates from inside the engine compartment and directly drives the pinion that meshes with the steering rack.
Features: Because the full assist force is no longer transmitted through the relatively less robust steering column, P-EPS can provide greater steering assistance than C-EPS. At the same time, locating the motor inside the engine compartment helps reduce noise inside the passenger compartment. However, its components must be able to withstand the high temperatures and vibration found in the engine compartment.
Application: P-EPS is commonly used in midsize sedans and SUVs that require greater steering assistance.
DP‑EPS (Dual‑Pinion EPS)
Working principle: DP-EPS can be regarded as an enhanced version of P-EPS. It uses two independent pinions. One pinion transmits the force generated by the driver turning the steering wheel and functions as the steering pinion. The other pinion is driven by the motor and provides assist force directly to the rack, functioning as the drive pinion. This division of functions allows the two components to work together, like two “helpers” applying force simultaneously at critical points.
Features: This design provides powerful and precise steering assistance, a rapid response, and a stable, premium steering feel. Because the assist force acts directly on the rack, it also reduces the errors and vibration that may occur in conventional mechanical transmission, resulting in improved quietness.
Application:DP-EPS is widely used in mid-range to premium vehicles and midsize or large SUVs. Examples include the SAIC Volkswagen Passat and Audi Q6, which are equipped with this type of system.
R‑EPS (Rack‑Assist EPS)
Working principle: R-EPS provides steering assistance in the most direct manner. The motor is arranged parallel to the steering rack and applies a large amount of assist force directly to the rack through a ball-screw or belt-drive mechanism.
Features: R-EPS can provide the highest level of steering assistance among all EPS types and delivers powerful performance. In addition, because the motor and actuator are located away from the passenger compartment, this configuration helps improve interior quietness.
Application:R-EPS is mainly used in large SUVs with heavy front-axle loads, luxury sedans, and certain high-performance vehicles.
These four EPS types are selected according to vehicle size, performance requirements, and cost considerations. Simply put, small vehicles generally use the structurally simple and cost-effective C-EPS. Midsize vehicles often upgrade to P-EPS or DP-EPS for greater steering assistance and an improved driving experience. Large, luxury, and performance vehicles typically use R-EPS, which provides the strongest steering assistance and incorporates the most advanced technology.
