The EPS (Electric Power Steering) system replaces hydraulic power assistance with electronic control. It consists of torque sensor, vehicle speed sensor, ECU, assist motor and reduction mechanism working together to deliver precise, adaptive and high‑efficiency steering assistance.

Main components of EPS electric power steering:

Sensors:
Torque Sensor: Detects the magnitude and direction of torque applied by the driver on the steering wheel, and converts the signal into voltage for the control unit.
Vehicle Speed Sensor: Monitors vehicle speed to adjust assist force — higher assistance at low speed and reduced assistance at high speed for better driving stability.
Steering Angle Sensor (for some systems): Detects steering wheel rotation angle and position.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU):
Receives sensor signals and calculates required assist torque and direction according to preset control strategies such as assist characteristic curves.
It commands the motor for power assistance, and integrates fault diagnosis and safety protection functions, enabling degraded operation under overheating or abnormal voltage conditions.

Assist Motor:
Mostly permanent‑magnet DC motor or brushless motor, outputs auxiliary torque following ECU commands.
Features high reliability, fast response and low noise.

Reduction Mechanism:
Reduces motor speed and amplifies torque via worm‑gear, planetary gear and other assemblies, and transfers motor output to the steering system.

Mechanical Steering Gear:
Adopts conventional rack‑and‑pinion mechanical structure to guarantee manual steering availability when EPS fails.

Optional Components (for some systems):
Electromagnetic Clutch: Disconnects motor from steering column under system fault or high‑speed conditions to switch to manual steering mode.
Redundant Design (high‑end systems): Dual MCU, redundant sensors or dual motors to improve safety for autonomous driving applications.


Working Process of EPS Electric Power Steering
When the driver turns the steering wheel, the torque sensor captures steering torque in real time while the vehicle speed sensor sends speed data to the ECU.
Based on torque, vehicle speed and other parameters, the ECU calculates target assist current with built‑in algorithms including table lookup and PID control.
The ECU activates the motor to generate corresponding torque. The torque is amplified by the reduction mechanism and applied to the steering system to assist driver steering.


Intelligent Control Modes:
Power Assist Control: Basic steering assistance.
Return‑to‑Center Control: Assists fast steering‑wheel return at low speed and applies damping to avoid over‑return at high speed.
Damping Control: Isolates steering wheel from road‑surface vibration.
