The EPS (Electric Power Steering) steering gear, also known as the electric power steering rack, is the core component of modern automotive steering systems. It replaces the traditional hydraulic steering structure and provides lighter, more precise, and safer steering assistance for passenger cars, SUVs, and new energy vehicles.
Different from conventional hydraulic power steering (HPS), the EPS steering system uses an electric motor, torque sensor, and ECU controller to calculate and output auxiliary power intelligently. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the sensor detects the steering angle and torque signal, and the ECU adjusts the assist force in real time according to the vehicle speed, achieving light steering at low speed and stable steering at high speed.
Main Structure & Working Principle
Most passenger vehicles adopt the rack-and-pinion steering structure matched with EPS assist system. The main components include steering rack, pinion gear, electric motor, worm gear reduction mechanism, torque sensor, tie rods, and rubber boots.
During operation, the steering column transmits the rotation force to the pinion gear. The pinion drives the rack to move horizontally, pushing the tie rods to control the front wheel deflection. The electronic assist system dynamically supplements steering power to reduce driver operation force.
